Unanswered calls, full dining rooms, no online system. A practical guide to getting the table you want on Costa Rica's Pacific coast.
Anyone who has travelled Costa Rica's Pacific coast in high season knows the pattern: you decide on dinner at six, start calling at six-thirty, and eat somewhere else at eight. Restaurant booking here is not difficult — it just rewards planning.
Why tables disappear
- Seasonality. December to April concentrates most visitors into a few coastal towns.
- Small dining rooms. Many of the best kitchens seat forty people, not two hundred.
- Phone-first culture. Plenty of restaurants still take reservations only by phone, and lines are busy at service time.
- Travel timing. Everyone eats after sunset, so demand lands in the same ninety minutes.
How to book well
Book the day you arrive
Reserve your key dinners as soon as your plans are set, not on the day. It takes a minute and removes the evening scramble.
Shift your time
An hour earlier or later usually opens availability, and early dinner in the tropics is pleasant — the heat has dropped and the room is calmer.
Say everything up front
Group size, high chairs, allergies, a birthday, a wheelchair, a late flight. Restaurants can accommodate almost anything with notice and very little without it.
